Are you looking for an alternative to Facebook, Instagram and Co? You’re at the right place here, let me introduce you to the platform SUBS.
First of all: What do the big commercial/social media platforms do have in common? They are all based in the United states, therefore they run their data policies according to their local regulations. They are mainly focussing on extracting user data in order to sell the data assets to marketing companies, therefore I do refer to them as commercial media platforms. What’s the alternative to that? Finally, finally there’s a European version of a social platform called Subs.tv that focuses on one main difference: Not being commercial, but being social. Let’s have a look at SUBS!
Back in the days Instagram used to be a place where people could follow their friends and some of their favourite creators. That changes at some point when Instagram turned itself into a commercial platform. The app changed the way photos where shown from a timeline based style to an algorithmic style, they also started to include advertisement. Pretty much every third to fourth post now includes an ad. In comparison, SUBS feels a bit like Instagram in the good old days, where the main focus was on postings by friends and content creators. Content Creators are stated as the heart of SUBS, their posts are shown without any algorithmic interference. They are bringing the social part back into social media platforms. Love it!
Another two point that I highly appreciate about SUBS:
The first of them is the no-censorship policy. Content Creators, whether they are photographers or models, can upload their art without the interference of censorship. (On this note, SUBS is working hard to to have a high standard of youth protection, their policy goes strictly against violence and pornography, they only allow “artistic” nudity. Only for example age verified members can access artwork without censorship).
Secondly, in order to access for example 18+ content, they have included a verification process. That’s a huuuuge bonus to avoid any bots and scammers. The most important part to mention here: The charges for the verification are used to plant trees. Yeah, you read that correctly – SUBS as a social media platform is planting trees for their verified users. Looks like they are the first carbon neutral social media network on the planet. How awesome is that?!
Another bonus that’s related to the verification process is the quality of the image and video material. I’m amazed by the high quality content that is shared on SUBS, there are some dope content creators out there.
